We were invited to witness an engagement ceremony yesterday between a Chinese and Kadazan couple in my kampung. The girl's father was my first cousin and the man's family are from Tenom of the Hakka Tribe. We were a bit late so when we reached the girl's house, they were already in the middle of settling the dowry with the usual 'bargaining' with the Ketua Kampung as the mediator and official representative of the Law. I took some photos to share with friends and also with my youngest daughter who had been assigned by her school teacher to write an essay on Kadazan wedding customs.
We overhead from the Ketua Kampung that the parents of the girl wanted initially RM19,000.00 and few live buffaloes but it was eventually agreed to RM9,000.00 with two buffaloes with the understanding that the man's side will settle the expenses for the wedding reception.
